Things We Like: Loveless

Loveless Volume 1 Anime CoverLast time on Things We Like, RD talked about her love affair for the meo site.

I’m not totally ga ga over that one (it’s so dark omg), but there are lot ‘o things we totally agree on and the Loveless anime and manga are one of them.

When RD first told me about Loveless, she said “OMG you have to watch this! It’s awesome!” She then proceeded with a description that left me having completely the wrong idea and actually not being sure I wanted to see it.

But then she sent me a disc for Christmas and I watched it and i was instantly, utterly in love. You could say it was love at first sight.

The story is about…well, how to describe it… It borders on chan, I have to warn you, but there’s no sexual content, it’s just emotional and beautiful. And also exciting and mysterious! There’s this kid, Ritsuka, he’s 12. His brother has been killed and he’s started a new school. He has cat ears and a tail! Which apparently in the story means he’s still a virgin. Then along comes Soubi, an older boy, actually a young man, who claims to have known his brother and insists that he and Ritsuka are now a fighting pair, with Soubi as the “Fighter” and Ritsuka as the “Sacrifice”, which was the role Ritsuka’s brother had before he died. Then Ritsuka finds himself all tangled up in this whole other world.

Ok, so this story defies description. No wonder RD’s original description left me unsure that I wanted to see it for myself.

The anime is like a lot of animes I’ve seen in that it lacks a totally fullfilling resolution–though it is still totally worth watching. And watch it in Japanese!! The voice acting is wonderful. Part of the reason the anime doesn’t “end” fully, is that the manga goes on. Currently there are 6 volumes available translated into English. The anime covers up through part of volume 4, I believe.

In the interest of prosthelyzation, here are some links…
