Flawed Characters & The People Who Love Them

RD has been doing most of the work on this blog. So I thought I’d write a little story to help her out.
Once upon a time, two girls were spending their lives writing a story. Ok, several stories, but for our purposes, one in particular.
It focused upon two beautiful contrasting brothers, Ciaran and Malik, and was later called My Brother’s Keeper. And ‘lo they needed other characters to help these two find each other. So Dashi was created and then Dex came to be.
And several weeks later, Denise said, “Dex is lovely and beautiful and I love him.”
“Yis,” RD replied, “You speaketh the truth.”
“However…”
Eyebrow arching ensued from both characters and co-author alike.
“Don’t you think he is maybe too perfect?” Denise voiced her concern tentatively. “Perhaps verging on the dreaded Mary Sue? Or Gary whatever they call it?”
“Oh.” RD frowned in consternation. How could she deny the truth, Dex was perfect! Who wouldn’t want to be him? Malik sure as hell did.
“I have a plan,” Denise told her before too much fretting could transpire. “Let’s give him a flaw.”
“Ooh.” RD had birthed Malik. She knew all about flaws. Gritty and wonderful. She liked flaws.
“Let’s make him arrogant. Just a bit, of course,” Denise rushed to clarify, fearful of disturbing too much of Dex’s perfection.
“Oooh.” RD approved. Denise could feel her co-author’s talons sink into Dex’s wee hide.
And so it was.
And to their combined surprise, with his arrogance, the girls loved him even more!
So much so, that they gave him his own story–which he was forced to share with Malik. And another boy named Jalla, who also saw the love in Dex, as many are wont to do.
And the story was called Triangulations.
Thus lovely Dex had a chance to learn first-hand the dangers of arrogance; and, being who he was, he succeeded in looking damn pretty doing so.

Triangulations will be released by DEP April 15th, forever altering tax day as RD knows it.
